Partnering
A Sustainable Program
In 2004, “With a $4,200
grant and an additional $3,200 in matching funds
from Clackamas County, the Community Environment
Division purchased 50 ClearStream Recyclers, launched
an education and promotion program for businesses
and residents, and hired a part-time staff person”
(Resource Recycling).
Clackamas County tested their ClearStream Recyclers
(CycleMax) at 45 community events that summer.
The program was an immediate success. Once the
recycling containers were put into use, the county
started getting phone calls from event organizers
booking the ClearStream CycleMax well in advance
of events.
In 2005, with demand for the
containers running high, the City of Portland
and other partners collectively purchased 430
additional units to expand the program further
still.
Now, in 2006, Clackamas County
has purchased an additional 100 ClearStream CycleMax
and TrashMax for their farmers’ market and
spring events. The city of Portland also purchased
another 50 ClearStream for Portland State University.
With a total of 650 units at their disposal, the
partners are well on their way to create a regional
identity for event recycling with ClearStream.

A 3RD GRADER MAJORS IN RECYCLING Katie
Curry, a 9-year-old third
grader from Franklin,
Indiana, had a big idea.
Katie wanted to help
buy her town new benches
because the old ones
were falling apart. Staff
at the Johnson County
Solid Waste District,
helped Katie apply for
a grant from the Indiana
Office of Energy and
Defense Development.
Katie organized the collection of 80 bags of No. 1 and No.
2 recyclable plastics using ClearStream ® Recyclers.
In late July, Katie traveled with her fans
and 80 bags of bottles
to the Green Tree Plastics
plant, in Evansville,
Indiana, to see her bottles
made into a bench. The
group drove back
to Franklin with the
bench made from Katie’s
bottles. It will be presented in the fall to the students at her school to
remind them how recycling
works and to thank them for
helping to close the
loop.

ClearStream recycling containers – coming
to an event near you
They’re here . . . they’re
there . . . they’re everywhere! ClearStream
containers for cans and plastic bottles are doing
their job all over the county.
So named because of their “see-through” design,
these containers are portable and great
for use at parks, fairs, farmers’ markets,
outdoor movies and other community events. During the school year
many of the county’s supply of ClearStreams
go to schools for use in cafeterias and gym areas.
“It’s easy to clean up and recycle
when you see
a ClearStream right next to a garbage
can,” said Liz Braman, the county’s
ClearStream Loan Program coordinator. Look for them at an event near you.
If you would like to borrow some ClearStreams
for your public event, call Liz Braman..
